I actually used to trace lots of character models used for animation and I would do studies, I would break down the pose from the gesture, proportions, form, and stylization, then I would take the pieces of the pose, say the arm, and draw it free hand side by side using the information I already learned and I would repeat this process with the rest of the body parts, then in the end I would take the whole pose and do it all free hand, and I would even repeat the same process for a single figure multiple times, that I found was the fastest way to learn to not rely on the reference it only took about a month It would be beneficial if you would use the reference more as a guide rather than directly copying it, it also helps develop your own style because you’ll see what you want/don’t want to exaggerate The reason why I would say to not trace would be if you are beginning your fundamentals and don’t have a good grasp on proportions, because if your tracing then your just cheating yourself out of becoming a better artist There is nothing wrong with tracing, pros do it all the time, it isn’t cheating for them because they already developed their skills
